(Bishkek, Central Asia News Agency) During its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2027 to 2028, Kyrgyzstan plans to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and the protection of human life, and to pursue a constructive and consistent policy. Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubayev made these remarks on September 21 at the annual ministerial dinner for current and newly elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council held in New York.
According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Minister noted that this mechanism is of particular value, as it combines the experience accumulated by countries already serving on the Security Council with the preparations of those about to assume their duties starting January 1. He thanked the outgoing Security Council members — Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia — for their contributions and the experience they have accumulated.
Zheenbek Kulubayev emphasized that Kyrgyzstan’s election as a member of the UN Security Council for 2027–2028, with the support of all Central Asian countries, is not regarded by Kyrgyzstan as a privilege, but as a responsibility to the region and to the entire United Nations.
As the only Central Asian representative on the Security Council, Kulubayev noted that Kyrgyzstan’s priority topics include supporting the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and the UN Peacebuilding Commission, as well as the issue of Afghanistan’s stability and the link between peace, development, and climate resilience, with particular attention to mountain countries.
The Minister also mentioned that the second Global Mountain Summit, “Bishkek+25,” will be held in Bishkek in October 2027, and invited his colleagues to attend.
Addressing the issue of UN Security Council reform, Zheenbek Kulubayev reiterated that Kyrgyzstan supports fair geographical representation. He pointed out that the long-standing under-representation of developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America continues to cause imbalances that need to be corrected.
In conclusion, the Foreign Minister stated that Kyrgyzstan is ready to be a reliable partner in the UN Security Council and a bridge connecting different regions and different positions, and to maintain close cooperation with both current and newly elected Council members.
